How do you make a home office less “officey”?

Beautiful, custom furniture with plenty of storage! For this home office, the last thing we wanted to do was overpower the cozy, inviting design details with a heavy file cabinet, and especially in the corner where it would be placed – darker wood tones with a weighty feel would not do. But practical paper storage was a must for our client.

Home Office Custom File CabinetOur solution was to custom-select a tall chest of drawers with lateral file storage, in a distressed finish. It’s painted white, but rubbed through so you can see some of the wood coming through – but not too much as to make it dark.

The white we chose is the same finish as the bottom half of the desk (also custom designed – actually a dining table we added a drawer to), to pull the color through the space. These choices keep it light, and coordinate with the rest of the room’s soft, feminine feel in the other furniture, window treatments, walls’ faux finish and accessories.

The chest of drawers is not only aesthetically appealing, but well-made and serves the functional purpose of keeping important papers organized and accessible, but out-of-sight, in an exquisite piece of furniture. The homeowner loves it.
